Composting Has Arrived on Campus

Effective Monday, January 14th, our campus will be even more sustainable through composting. Hunt Hall, The Huddle and South Congress Market will all participate in this new effort.

Michael Smith, manager at Bon Appétit, and Brian Burns, Assistant Director of Facilities, consulted three prospective vendors and based their selection on a combination of cost, terms, and capabilities. Mike Stone, Director of Auxiliary Services, joined Michael and Brian in the final selection process. The company selected for the job was Break It Down.

Bon Appétit is initially bearing the expense of the service. However, if sufficient food waste is collected to justify removal of one or more of the 8-yard waste containers, those costs will be shared.

The bins are located on the Hunt Hall and South Congress Market loading docks. They are scheduled to be collected twice weekly during the regular school year.

Break it Down will report on volume of compostable materials collected will be reported, and the food waste diverted from a landfill will be calculated.

Signs in Hunt Hall, The Huddle and South Congress Market help everyone to actively participate in the program. It is easy and your participation will make a difference!
