Loop, a new zero-waste platform, recently launched with global companies coming together to create a supply chain that reuses product packaging. While the program hasn’t launched in Austin yet, you can reduce single-use packaging in your day to day life by shopping in bulk with your own containers.
You may have seen your grocery store’s bulk aisle but never ventured down it. I’m here to tell you the bulk aisle has some of the best snacks in the store. With a little extra planning, you can shop the aisle without creating more waste by saying no to the plastic bags that are available. Instead, bring your own reusable containers or jars to get your goodies home. (Finally a use for all those pasta sauce jars!)
Buying in bulk has some advantages. You only have to buy what you need, which keeps your items fresh. Another advantage is the savings. Bulk prices can be 10-60% less than what you find on the shelf.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help as you get comfortable in the bulk aisle. A store associate can help you zero out the scale to make sure that you are only charged for what you put into your container.
