En Casa
Magdalena Lopez, ’19

Tell us about En Casa.
En Casa is an online store of natural, hand made, and fairly traded home goods. We take pride in working with Mexican artisans who hand make each product from their villages. The aim is for the customer to enjoy a piece of art that shows tradition and history, while adding style and personality to their living areas!

What inspired you to promote Mexican artisans?
As a Mexican designer and artist, I feel a responsibility to preserve the art of my country, and to contribute to the growth and quality of life of Mexican artisans. Mexican artisans often have to stop making art pieces in their villages and move to the cities to find other jobs. I want to create a business that will preserve their traditions by allowing them to sell their work online through my site.

What role does sustainability play in En Casa?
In En Casa, we aim to preserve the environment and conserve natural resources. Our artisan partners hand make each product with only natural and organic materials. None of our products are made in factories or industrial facilities. Building social equity and supporting our artisan partners’ well-being are fundamental parts of En Casa’s mission. Not only do we make sure we are paying them fairly for their work, but we also give them back part of the annual profits in the form of grants.

Why is sustainability important to you?
As a young designer, it is important for me to work on projects that challenge my creativity to design products and services that are good for the environment, and at the same time good for our societies. I believe that our business should promote growth both, economically and socially. I want my projects to have a positive impact on the world; to connect people and create better communities!
