In the 1950s, Doyle Hall opened its doors as a residence hall. By 2009, the building needed to change to meet the needs of the St. Edward’s campus. The architects, Scott Specht and Louise Harpman of the firm Specht Harpman, took inspiration from Fleck Hall’s makeover and decided to remodel instead of demolishing the building. Specht Harpman took a sustainable approach to the redesign of the “straightforward and timeless” building.
In its second act, Doyle Hall became the home of the Behavioral and Social Sciences department and a state-of-the-art psychology lab. The new design utilizes a sun-shade system to minimize heat from the afternoon sun; energy efficient lighting, heating, ventilation, and cooling; a white reflective roof; and avoided sending waste to the landfill by utilizing the existing concrete structure.
Our favorite green feature of the building is quite literally green! Between Premont Hall and Doyle Hall, the architects constructed a courtyard. Trees shade the area and make it the perfect place to study, meet friends, or enjoy a cup of coffee from Jo’s at Doyle Hall.
