Wild Basin Creative Research Center has several internships available for Spring 2019. Read each listing carefully – application instructions vary for each position.
Wild Basin Dark Sky Intern
Wild Basin is seeking an enthusiastic and responsible undergraduate or graduate student to assist with planning and development of a Dark Sky Program at the Preserve. The Dark Sky Internship responsibilities will include: becoming acquainted with the requirements for Urban Dark Sky Place certification by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA); helping to plan and conduct Dark Sky events and developing related outreach and educational materials; measuring and photographing the night sky at Wild Basin; developing a “Lighting Management Plan” for the preserve; and working with Wild Basin and the SEU Facilities staff to prepare the application to IDA for Urban Dark Sky Place certification.
Preference will be given to upperclassmen and graduate students with expressed interest in sustainability. Wild Basin Outreach and Public Relations Intern
Wild Basin is seeking students with excellent communication skills to assist with outreach to the campus community and the general public. Intern duties include organizing outreach activities, such as tabling in Ragsdale Center and Stewardship Days at Wild Basin, as well as writing blog posts and creating social media posts that appeal to students and the Austin community. This internship could also include graphic design, video, photography, writing articles for local newspapers, or other components depending on the student’s interests and abilities.
Hours are flexible and will require some time spent at Wild Basin and some time spent on campus. 10 hours per week required. Preference is given to upperclassmen and graduate students. Wild Basin Environmental Education Intern
The Wild Basin Environmental Education Internship provides students of education an opportunity to gain important ecological knowledge of the Texas Hill Country while working to enrich the experience of young students who visit the preserve for guided tours and other activities. Intern duties include helping to schedule school tours and manage visiting groups as well as developing educational, interpretive, and promotional materials for K-12 students. Internship tasks may also include the development of printed or digital media and materials for hands-on activities for children, depending on the interests and abilities of the intern. Other duties as assigned.
Hours are flexible but a regular schedule needs to be set at the beginning of the internship. At least 8 hours of service should be conducted at Wild Basin per week, with the possibility of doing some work from campus. Preference is given to upperclassmen and graduate students or those with previous experience. Wild Basin Computer Science Intern
Seeking students with excellent organization skills to assist with database management. Duties include consolidating and organizing contact information from several programs using File Maker Pro and organizing Box files for efficient access. Other duties as assigned.
Hours are flexible and will require at least 5 hours at Wild Basin per week. Preference is given to upperclassmen and graduate students. Additional information: These internships are located at Wild Basin Creative Research Center, an off-campus location, 11 miles west of campus in Westlake Hills (805 N. Capital of Texas Highway). Reliable transportation to Wild Basin is required. The following are additional expectations of Wild Basin interns: consistent attendance and punctuality to scheduled shifts; independent and collaborative work ethic; ability to communicate effectively and positively with the public and co-workers; certified SEU van driver or willingness to become certified.
