The Austin Transportation Department’s Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Program is looking to hire a part-time intern starting winter 2019.
TDM is the flip side of infrastructure. It focuses on helping people use the existing infrastructure in place to walk, bike, share rides, or take public transit. TDM is the idea that we can improve mobility by changing how we get around rather than trying to build our way out of congestion. By changing preferences and patterns, transportation demand management offers the fastest and most cost-effective way to manage traffic congestion.
The TDM Internship is an exciting opportunity to help people improve the ways in which they choose to get around the City of Austin. This internship is only eligible for college students, master’s students, or recent graduates with a major in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Public Policy, Environmental or Geographical Sciences, Marketing and Communications, Psychology, Behavioral Science, or a related field. The intern will play an integral role in multiple TDM projects and will gain experience collaborating with City staff and other organizations in the fields of transportation, planning, and marketing. The intern will have an opportunity to learn about the City’s transportation efforts while being charged with focused technical research and writing projects with support and guidance from the TDM Program Team.
A great candidate is a daily user of multiple modes of transportation and is comfortable conveying the benefits of not driving alone, in person and in professional documents. This will be a part-time unpaid position working no more than 30 hours a week out of the Austin Transportation Department Office and will last 4-8 months.
The role of the TDM Program Intern will include:
- Assisting the TDM Program Team with best practice policy research, data analysis, content development, and community engagement.
- Collaborating with staff on TDM programs such as Commute Connections, Smart Trips Austin, Commute Solutions, and other projects.
- Developing presentations and other collateral for program and stakeholder meetings.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook, (Adobe CS & GIS a plus)
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Familiarity using public transportation, as well as commuting by bike and foot
- Ability to work independently and as a reliable team member
- Detail oriented, organized, and creative
- Engaged in a field of study closely related to internship offered
