Green Thanksgiving tips

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate with friends and family, but sometimes, the day can be stressful. Hosting a green Thanksgiving might be the last thing on your mind but it’s easy to have a more sustainable Thanksgiving gathering without adding stress, and you might even save some money along the way.

SHOPPING
When you’re shopping for Thanksgiving, choose local ingredients and produce. You’ll get in-season food and can share with your guests that the food is local!

HOSTING
Skip paper and plastic dinnerware. This is the time to use your china and glassware! After the party, use your dishwasher since it is more efficient than washing by hand.

If you are using recyclable serving ware or offering canned drinks, have the recycle bin visible so your friends and family can use it easily.

Wrap leftovers in wax paper or aluminum foil. Wax paper is biodegradable and aluminum foil can be recycled if it’s free of food bits. You can also invite your guests to bring their own food containers to take home leftovers.

DECORATING
Repurpose items you already have. Grab that basket you haven’t used in ages and fill it with local produce for a centerpiece or entryway decoration. If you still have your pumpkin from Halloween, you can use it as a flower vase or on your table with candles. On your next walk, look for pinecones, acorns, or trimmings to decorate your home with some cranberries (set a few aside before you make the sauce) for a pop of color.

GET OUTDOORS
Don’t forget to enjoy the crisp, fall air! A walk is a great way to get outside and spend time with the ones you are most thankful for this Thanksgiving.
