The latest on Austin’s boil water notice and how to save water

Austin Water has issued a city-wide boil water notice. While the city works to stabilize water plant operations, they have asked for all residents to reduce their water use by 20%.

Here are some easy to implement ways you can reduce water:

  • Try to shower short. Aim for a 5 minute or less shower. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth, shaving, and shampooing or conditioning your hair.
  • Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water while you’re waiting for it to warm up. Use that water later for watering indoor plants or running the garbage disposal.
  • Don’t use the toilet as a wastebasket. Put tissues, insects, and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet. This will help the city’s water plants operate more efficiently.
  • Wash full loads of laundry. If you need to wash a partial load, set your machine to use the least amount of water required.
  • If you have automatic sprinklers, make sure they are turned off. Your grass and plants are getting plenty of water from the rain this season.
