SEU Grad is Building Austin’s First Tiny Hemp Home to Combat Homelessness

Henry Valles ’08 is currently raising funds to build Austin’s first-ever tiny hemp home in the city’s Community First! Village! This initiative is part of the Mobile Loaves & Fishes nonprofit, providing “affordable, permanent housing for the disabled and chronically homeless in Central Texas.” Watch this video describing the project.

Why Hemp?

As Henry explains it, “Hemp building materials, specifically those made of Hempcrete, are highly sustainable, healthy building components that are non-toxic, mold resistant, pest resistant, fire resistant and carbon negative. As the US hemp industry continues to grow, these materials are becoming increasingly affordable and accessible. We’re hoping that, through this project, we can help show how leveraging hemp-based materials in home construction can transform the way we build affordable and sustainable homes for all in the future.”

Henry and his team are currently raising funds for this project and need another $5,000 to make it a reality. Check out their Fundly page here and share with others to help combat Austin’s homelessness in a sustainable way!
