The thousands of tons of construction debris generated by Austin’s building boom would hinder reaching Austin’s recycling goals if not for the City’s new Construction and Demolition Recycling Ordinance. Construction projects and remodeling jobs for more than 5,000 square feet of floor area must now meet recycling requirements under the ordinance.
Construction and demolition debris makes up approximately 20 percent of material going to Austin landfills, so this ordinance is a critical step on the City’s journey to Zero Waste (The City’s Zero Waste goal is to reduce material sent to the landfill by 90 percent by 2040).
Austin Resource Recovery staff are conducting Lunch and Learn training sessions for contractors and other interested parties. For more information about those sessions or the ordinance in general, join the mailing list, reach the recent news release, or visit the Austin Resource Recovery website.
