Save the Tapajos River Awareness and Advocacy Event: Nov 14

The Amazon Forest is one of the most important fresh water systems in the world; it is home to one of the biggest levels of biodiversity and natural resources, making it one of the current development frontiers in the world. In recent years, the Brazilian government has started to plan and build series of hydroelectric dams along the Amazon’s major tributaries in order to expand its energy supply. However, these projects disrupt the unique ecosystems and threaten the communities along the rivers’ banks. The Tapajós River is one of the major rivers of the region, and is currently where the natives are fighting the most for their rights to life and freedom. The Save Tapajós River event is a way to create awareness, find out what is happening and to whom, and to invite people to take action on this issue. Participants will hear why we should care about the Amazon, watch a short documentary about the indigenous groups in the area, and then they will be invited to sign a petition regarding the issue.

The event will be on November 14th at 6:30 PM in Fleck 305. We hope to see you there!
