As the weather warms up and you stroll across campus, you may notice some new additions to our beautiful grounds. These combination recycling and waste bins were recently procured by our Facilities Department in order to help St. Edward’s comply with the City of Austin’s Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO). The URO requires a 1:1 ratio of waste to diverted materials (recycling, composting, etc.) on all commercial properties (that’s 50% diverted materials, 50% waste).
During the process of filing St. Edward’s Annual Diversion Plan for waste, the Environmental Health & Safety Intern in the Facilities Department, Ellie Blair, distributed a recycling education survey to students. Much of the feedback from the survey showed Ellie and the Facilities Department that students had concerns regarding the accessibility to recycling on campus. This opportunity to better serve students and the community at large came at a perfect time as the university was already working to comply with the City of Austin URO.
Right now there are 20 bins located across campus at the highest pedestrian traffic areas (click here to view the map). Our Facilities Department will be re-using older trash receptacles in alternative areas on campus.
