Religion and Climate Change Joining Forces? Find Out How With This “Climate Change Evangelist”

Katharine Hayhoe is Associate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas Tech University with an interest in climate change. She’s also an Evangelical Christian. In today’s climate change debate, this is a fairly unexpected combination. But Katharine hopes to change that perception by bridging the gap between climate change science and modern Christianity. She refers to herself as a “climate change evangelist” and believes that her faith obligates her to educate others about climate change. Her husband is the pastor of their local church, and together they published a book in 2009 called A Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions.

Check out some of Katharine’s videos here that she recorded through a partnership with PBS explaining her climate change evangelism. She has a YouTube channel with more videos here. She also gave a TEDx talk, spoke with Bill Moyers, and defended her stance at an April 27th, 2015 presentation to the Austin City Council where she was challenged by a council member.
