Dr. John Abbott, Director of the Wild Basin Creative Research Center, was awarded approximately $15,000 by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for late spring and summer fieldwork on the distribution and conservation status of rare Odonata (dragonflies) in southeast Texas. Dr. Abbott is a specialist on New World Odonata and specifically, the Texas Emerald dragonfly, Somotochlora margarita, which has been petitioned for federal listing as an endangered species due to significant data gaps regarding its distribution and habitat. The TXPWD Conservation Action Plan cites the need for field surveys and assessments of current threats to this species.
