We’d like to introduce you to our next two Sustainability Champions: Dinah Sbelgio Kinard and Charles Porter! Every two weeks, we will be revealing two more champions, so please visit the page and keep your eyes out in Horizon for the newest pair. Help us give a big thanks to these eco-friendly folks! And let them inspire you to become more sustainable.
Charles Porter, Assistant Professor in the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences: You stressed the importance of water conservation and led the campus conversation during Texas’s most severe drought. You taught us that short-term solutions, such as taking shorter showers, must be paired with long-term strategies like funding desalination plants and creating reservoirs. Through your knowledge and perseverance, you remind us that “water is the secret to life on earth, and we need to better understand it. And we need to better respect it.”
Dinah Sbelgio Kinard, Director of Admission Partnerships: You’ve extended your commitment to sustainability beyond St. Edward’s campus and into your own home. By using cloth diapers exclusively for both of your children, driving a Prius, installing the NEST thermostat to use less A/C to not only decrease costs but your carbon footprint as well, using eco-friendly cleaning products, purchasing mostly organic fruits and veggies as well as grass-fed and antibiotic-free meats, installing low-flow toilets, LED light bulbs, and bamboo flooring, you’re proving that you can truly make almost every aspect of your life sustainable. With your plans to start composting and harvesting rainwater, keep inspiring!
