From August 17th-24th, Professor of History Charles Porter attending the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction’s 16th Annual World Conference on Education in San Diego, CA. This year’s conference theme was “Integrating Education for a Lasting Culture of Peace and Care of Planet Earth.” Professor Porter was joined by participants from around the world, including the Philippines, Nigeria, and Canada.
Professor Porter wrote and presented a paper to this global audience titled, “Moot Mediations in Global Transboundary Water Disputes: Teaching Peaceful Problem-Solving in International Water Relations.” As part of the presentation, Professor Porter and his audience discussed the global problems between nations sharing surface water and groundwater (aquifers). He gave the audience a package of information on St. Edward’s, including the university’s mission statement and a variety of examples of what he does in his water workshops on campus. Professor Porter concluded the presentation with an informal “circle-up” discussion in which he and his audience swapped stories about water quality from across the globe.
