Last semester, the Facilities Department conducted a study to reduce electric consumption in the parking garage. The existing lights consume approximately 125 watts per fixture. Some fixtures burn 24 hours per day, others burn only when it is dark. A number of LED lights from various manufacturers were tested. Energy consumption ranged from 52-77 watts per fixture and some included motion sensors. After seeking input from users and noting the light dispersion, the light chosen was a 52-watt fixture with a motion sensor that will cut light output by 50% if there is no activity in the area.
The LED lights are expected to be shipped this week and the City of Austin is expected to inspect the existing lighting so that we qualify for an energy rebate. After getting the approval from the City to proceed, lights are expected to be installed during the spring semester. This example of the Facilities Department continuous approach to sustainability is expected to save the university approximately 50% of its energy consumption in the parking garage while improving lighting quality. After the light investment is capitalized, future savings will be used to fund other energy-saving initiatives.
