TAME : The STEM Organizaton for Texas Bilingual Students
By: Amanda R.
As the world of STEM continues to thrive in Texas, the need for bilingual aid also increases. According to the National Center for Education Statistics in November 2022, one in five or an estimated 750,000 Texas students are English-learning students who need extra help in the classroom. With this statistic in mind, here is a Texas STEM organization that caters to bilingual students – Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME).
Founded in 1976, Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) has made it its mission to motivate and provide STEM resources to underrepresented students, educators, and their families. TAME inspires future engineers, as well as, other STEM professionals with different methods!
TAME SCIENCE SQUAD COMIC BOOKS
Starting off with their most unique tactic, TAME offers an amazing comic book series, TAME Science Squad Comic Books, The series follows a group of 5 diverse students who use their STEM knowledge to solve the day! Offered in English and Spanish, the comic book series is always free to read, as well as, the activities listed on the site.
In their latest release, the TAME Science Squad takes over space in an action-packed, educational adventure! With STEM terms and explanations, the Science Squad must work together to fix the vehicle that has left them stranded in order to get back home. And to make things even better, the comic book was written by TAME students from San Antonio!
TAME Trailblazers
Are you looking for more hands-on work for your students? Look no further, TAME Trailblazers are STEM exhibits on the road! Traveling across different cities in Texas, TAME Trailblazers are an excellent way for schools to reach out to students and educate them about the importance of a STEM career.
Family STEM Events and TAME Clubs
Another way to get involved with TAME is to join their Family STEM Events and TAME Clubs! Held at local libraries or schools, their family STEM events offer fun STEM activities for the entire family like robot races, petting zoos, telescopes, etc. Family STEM events also offer information about summer camps, STEM classes, and after-school programs for students. If you are looking for an extracurricular activity for your student or if you are interested in volunteering, join a TAME club! TAME clubs offer activity workbooks, resources, and a community to students. TAME Clubs are free and can be joined in person or virtually!
With its efforts and a website that comes in 9 different languages, TAME has reached over 30,000 students in the past year alone! Interested in joining? Find your nearest chapter here!
