These paintings by New York artist Natalie Frank interest me because of their intensity and theme. Grimm’s tales are morbid and frightening, and Frank captures that perfectly in her gouache and chalk pastel paintings. The discovery by Frank, after reading through these stories, that they are “eccentric narratives alive with sexuality and violence” is what creates such captivating art. Her exploration of such well known stories through a feminist view forces one to see a new side of the Brothers Grimm.
