1. Based upon the readings the word design comes with many definitions. Across all the readings what are some examples of these differences?
According to Paul Rand, “Design is a problem solving activity.” According to Vilem Flusser, Design is a way of tricking nature and ourselves. According to Hal Foster, “the rule of the designer is even broader than before.” Many believe design is a way of discovering how to use the world to fit our needs. Yet, designers must do this in different ways.
2. How does misunderstanding or rather multiple definitions of a singular word effect how we perceive design? Be sure to reference the four articles.
Because there are so many meanings, designers are able to bend to their own will. Designers are able to float between practicality and art so that they can create something totally useful. As Hal Foster says, “Contemporary design is part of a great revenge of capitalism on postmodernism.”
Personal Reflection:
1. How do you suppose you could better prepare yourself as a maker of aesthetic objects/ideas?
I could learn more about design and aesthetics. I could read what other artists have written.
2. What are things you currently do to practice your creative muscle?
I try to draw often and find new ways to draw things. I look up tutorials for photoshop and see what different things I can make.
