The artworks are huge. It feels almost impossible to be able to look at each of the images by itself. The images are formed by people. One piece is composed of completely unique individuals while the second looks like each image is of one girl. Each image is surrounded by other people on all sides. Some are smiling, some are sad, some you can’t even see their faces. The colors are mostly blacks, browns, yellows, and reds in one piece and black and grey in the other. Some of the faces are colored and some are black and white. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to how the colors are arranged. Each face is separated uniformly so that they form rows and columns. They are also all about the same size, although some are slightly bigger and smaller. There is texture from the boards the images are painted on and the paper they are drawn on.
In each piece, the hair stands out the most at first glance. It’s because of the dark colors against the lighter faces that makes the hair pop. Each face may be different, but the hair helps show each persons personality. They are painted in the same way, with mostly the same colors, depending on skin and hair color. The graphite drawings are also drawn the same way, allowing each portrait to fit with the others. There doesn’t seem to be any type of organization on the painted portraits. The size, color, gender, point of view all change randomly. They aren’t even arranged by the year. The graphite portraits, however do seem to be arranged by date they were drawn or when the pictures were taken. The images are related of course by the fact that they are all the heads of people. Even though, they aren’t arranged in any way, the paintings are balanced because the size and color differences work together. It doesn’t feel random, even if it looks like it. They form a nice pattern of circles lined up. They flow very well into each other. There is an abundance of variety because of the fact that each face is different, while still feeling similar because they are all the same size and shape.
The paintings are about capturing people in different times. The black and white images are about capturing a young girl throughout a span in her life. The artist is trying to show that people are connected through time. No matter how distant they can still be together. The purpose of the artwork is to showcase the slight changes we go through while also showing that we don’t change that much. The piece makes me feel happy and content and connected with all these people I’ve never met.
My first impression was just that there were quite a lot of people represented. Now that I’ve spent some time looking at them, I found that each is very important to the piece. It is a very successful piece because it makes you feel. It shows how there are so many people in the world and while at first, everyone looks the same, when you look closer, everyone is different. Everyone has a body and mind that exists in the world, or existed. By dating the portraits, the artist adds some context. I am able to understand that these people looked this exact way in some period of time, which is amazing, considering how much people are constantly changing. It’s a small piece of someone’s life that we get to share. The images inspire me to notice others and the passing of time better.
