VISU 1100 : Blog Post #6

  1. My greatest strengths as a researcher/writer include:
    1. I can write a good formal paper that is quick to the point
    2. I can make a good outline when I know and have all the relevant information I need
  2. I need to work on these aspects of research and writing:
    1. I need to work on my writing skills. I can write a nice paper, but my grammar and spelling are sometimes messed up.
    2. Critical thinking
  3. I learn best & accomplish most when:
    1. I am a very hands-on kind of person. I learn better if I am doing the task with a teacher, like photoshop or another adobe product lesson I need to do the motions, not just watch and then do it later with my notes.

 

ACTION PLAN

Art History Action Plan

  1. Watch the videos multiple times and take an abundance of notes
  2. Create the required images into physical note cards
  3. Study note cards every single day
  4. Do not wait till the last minute to cram for an exam
  5. Reread the book and focus on the important images that were talked about in class
  6. Study harder
  7. Don’t procrastinate
  8. Talk to Brantl when I am stuck or need help
  9. Get a good amount of sleep
  10. Don’t stress over the little things

Choose one class that you are struggling with or are not doing as well as you could.
Now make a list of 10 ways you could improve your performance in this class.

VISU 1100: Blog Post #5

Part 1: Upload 2 images of current classwork: a project(s) you are currently working on or have completed from one of your studio/visual studies courses.

  1. What was the goal of the assignment? Or what was the question posed by this assignment?
  2. How did you go about reaching this goal or answering this question?

A. My first image is a collage I created for VISU 1311. The question I had to “answer” was “how do you “take” an image? Harmony: layering and building meaning. I’m not quite sure if I even answered the question. I’m not sure how I created this and even questioned if this was a collage because I don’t understand them.

B. My second image is a work in progress for my Drawing I final. I had to create and image that was conceptual and observational. So what I did was I took my nice porcelain teapot and tea cup and moved objects in the background and changed the way the image looked on the cup.

Part 2: Self-Critique: On your blog, answer the following questions about one project you are currently working on or have completed from one of your studio/visual studies courses (see Part 1 of Blog post #3).

  1. What is the strongest aspect of this work?
    1. I think my strongest work on the collage is the fact that one can get lost in the image.
    2. For my second piece I really enjoy the reflection that is shown under where a glass surface is supposed to be.
  2. What is the weakest aspect?
    1. I feel my weakest aspect on the first piece is color. It’s all very dark, even though there is a yellowish or gold color. The color kind of feels muted.
    2. My weakest for the ink piece is the sloppiness on the actual paper. You can’t see it that well in this image, but the page is really messy looking because I would forget that the ink was still wet in some places and it would be smudged.
  3. How can the composition or form be improved?
    1. Though I feel that the colors are slightly muted I feel that if I lightened them up it would make the image look kind of strange. I feel like they work together even I feel like there is something wrong with it.
    2. I could have practiced more if I had time and made sure that I could do this and would be completely confident in my skills.
  4. How can the project be strengthened conceptually?
    1. Maybe I could have created designs rather than just over lapping the image.
    2. I like this image the way it is. But I guess I could move some objects or add some objects to make it look less symmetrical.
  5. How can the project be strengthened technically?
    1. I am not sure how to technically strengthen the collage piece
    2. I could have used a different medium that I know better. But I enjoy this challenge

Kim Garza

Kim Garza in an app maker, adjunct professor, music and film collaborator, and was a graphic design major. She showed us her on going projects like her interpretive piece based on Till The Clouds Roll By.

Tammie Rubin

Tammie Rubin is a ceramists and a professor at St. Edwards. In her personal projects uses plastic objects in a satirical way. She mainly focused on the basis of her work and showed us pictures.

James Shern (sp????)

James is a photographer and enjoys taking images of strange or accidental forms, like the scuff marks from skate boarders.

 

I did not enjoy this class, but that’s because this is my second Freshman Seminar class. And I greatly disliked the other class. My feelings toward this are not from the professors personally, it’s all because of my last experience that I dislike this and found it a bit of a waste of time at some points.

VISU 1100 Blog #11

Part 1:

I super duper enjoyed looking at Tuans’ work. I think it’s cool that he creates work for family and friends. All his work looked amazing.

Hollis’s work showed a lot of chaos, which was pretty cool. The natural disaster pieces are beautiful and I love the detail with in them.

I enjoyed looking at Bill’s progression through the different types of photos he took and created. I liked the effects that the long exposure created on some of them.

Part 2:

In 5 years I hope to-

  • Continue creating art, whether it be as my career or a side job
  • Possibly live abroad
  • Pursue other things I’m interested

Goals beyond college-

  • Have a stable job
  • Continue creating art (for my job or not)

VISU 1100 Blog post #9

Lynne is a photography teacher in Dallas. A lot of her work is inspired by being a cancer survivor. She recommended taking a break between undergraduate and graduate school so we can create more pieces that show what we are interested in and show who we really are other than the required pieces we have made at St. Edwards. If we work on our art alone we will be able to make portfolios entirely our own.

Miranda is a designer at a Bakery. She has designed the Muncher app and a social networking site for bartenders and many other amazing things. Because she has worked and done so many things in her life, she doesn’t like titles.

Dustin is a wedding photographer. He worked as an assistant photographer for Bill and then worked for a low end wedding photography company. He recommends becoming a wedding photographer because of the high demand, how easy it is to spread the word about your business, and how you’re able to be anywhere at almost anytime.

  1. Who did you most relate to? and why?
  2. Who surprised you? and why?
  3. What was the most valuable piece of advice you heard today?

1. I don’ t think I relate to any of them. I say this because I am a very unsure person and I don’t like comparing myself with others. But I feel like I may end up doing something else after graduation, like Nick Swift, who now runs his own whiskey business.

2. Nick Swift surprised me the most because everyone else how found jobs and within their respected major and immediately loved them, while Swift was freelance for a while but ended up quitting because it didn’t seem right for him.

3. Most important piece of advice was from Rebecca about internships and how many there are out there. How they will help us in the future to learn and possibly get a job after graduating.

VISU 1100: Blog #4

Rachel Broussard 

The first point Rachel gave was to go see art. Places she gave to visit were The Blanton, East Austin Studio Tours, The Contemporary Museum, etc. She told us to use the art building and that art takes time. She talked about a list of 10 things: 10 expert skills and 10 influences.

Caelan Navarrete

Caelan told us to make art work other than class assignments. This will help you to find your own style. An important piece of advice she gave us was to intern with an artist or creative organization. This will help you to gain experience and be able to learn more about the art world and how one functions in it.

Shelby Savage 

Shelby told us we could find an idea or statement to use in our art. Something that interests us will have us more motivated to create art. She also told us that we should find a medium that interests us.

Paul Young IV

Paul’s work were most of the posters for events on campus. Paul encouraged us to be active in the visual arts community not just at St. Edwards, but also outside in the real world. Go out and meet people within the community you want to join.

Crissy Smith 

Crissy encouraged us to find what we are passionate about and incorporate it and help it drive our art.

Juliana Ramirez

Juliana told us how she and her friends started up a gallery together. She emphasized the idea of going out and creating our own artistic opportunities, like she did with the gallery, and getting to know the art scene outside of school.

These are both collages for Visual Studies. These two photos show many of the types of pictures I took while I was down on South Congress. I liked taking photos of Plants, lines, and textures. Which is shown in these two collages.

VISU 1100: Time Management Post

The blank areas mean I was doing the same task for multiple hours.

I find that I am a intense procrastinator and should work on my study skills so I don’t have to study for long hours. I find that I should study in small spurts of time rather than the long periods that I recorded on this sheet.
