Finding a Public Relations Internship

After nine months with the same company, the  question now becomes, “what’s next?”  Having a summer internship secured in Houston, Texas I have roughly a month between now and then.  So what to do with all of this extra time? I figured I should get a temporary job in the mean time…done! So now on to finding an internship for the next fall semester.  My school has been promoting different ways to get jobs and internships in the coming semesters such as the Career Services department’s job and internship fair. St. Edward’s is extremely helpful in aiding its students in finding internships seeing as at least one is required for almost all degrees.  The job and internship fair hosts almost one hundred different companies from around the city.  Business attire is required and they suggest that you bring multiple copies of your resume.

If your school doesn’t have an organization that puts on internship fairs such as this one another thing that I have found helpful are websites that distribute your resume like Monster’s college portion of their website. It is important however to do your research on any companies that call you back about an interview.  A friend of mine got a call from a company who had advertised themselves as a public relations firm, but when she googled the company name she found a blog someone had written about the company being a scam.  She talked to our advertising professor who decided to look into it herself.  She found that this company, while calling itself a public relations company was actually more of a sales company calling everyone who applied to get them in for interviews.  What this company does is sell products door to door and over the phone.  Not to say that this is wrong, but it is definitely more of a sales internship than a public relations one.  Doing your homework before agreeing to any internship is the most important step in finding one that fits you.
