An Open Letter to Amanda Bynes

Dear Amanda Bynes,

Hi. You don’t know me, but I know you. I grew up watching you on Nickelodeon and honey you are hilarious. I remember sitting in front of my t.v. with my little brother cracking up at your skits. “Penelope Taynt”, “Judge Trudy” and who could forget “The Girls Room”. It was the sort  humor that I could relate to. No girl on television was as funny as you, and to this day there are a very limited few who have your gift for humor. But recently, Amanda, your change in behavior has been worrying me and many other of your fans.

You see, if this change had been gradual, it wouldn’t have been so startling. But it seems to me, as an outsider, that you have adapted a totally new persona overnight. Gone is is the old Amanda, who embodied what it meant to be America’s sweetheart. You were so different from the likes of Lindsay Lohan, who spiraled out of control as soon as she had her first taste of fame. You were one of the girls that I grew up with who was actually able to hold it together and have a lucrative career and a steady fan base.

I remember watching you next to Channing Tatum in She’s The Man. Though he may be a delicious piece of man candy, it was you who carried the entire film. You were absolutely infectious in Hairspray, your bubble presence so refreshing on the silver screen. You were adorable and sweet as always and your singing voice wasn’t half bad. And don’t even get me started on your performance in Easy A. The scene where you and Emma Stone shared a 3 hour friendship was hysterical. It was reminiscent of my own friendships with girls in high school, which were fleeting at best. I looked forward to watching your career blossom.

I know you’ve had some personal problems in the past few years. That difficult time was plastered all over every tabloid and magazine. The paparazzi were following your every move, and all of the sudden your name was on everyone’s tongues. The media was more than ready to shred your reputation and exploit your personal distresses, while your fans could only sit back and wonder what was going on in the head of Amanda Bynes. We all have our own demons, and I can hardly imagine what it was like to have yours on display for all of us to see. Famous or not, I don’t know any twenty year old who would have been able to get through that unscathed.

Recently, Amanda, you’ve changed. You have taken to Twitter as your primary means of communication. Out of context, it is difficult for us fans to understand what exactly you are talking about. 140 characters is not nearly enough. And 30 second videos only give us a snippet into your life. You tell us that you are no longer talking to your family, and that your friends don’t speak for you. That’s fine. We all go through ins and outs with our parents, and sometimes friends aren’t who you think they are. But Amanda, from one young woman to another, it’s really worrying to watch this transition.

The media has demonized you and even called you crazy. Their words are harsh, even painful. But I think, just like all of your 681,407 Twitter followers, they just want an explanation. But In my opinion, I don’t think you neccesarily owe them one. It really isn’t any of their business to begin with

If you are finally the Amanda Bynes that you have always wanted to be, then good for you. But if you are acting this way to get the attention of anyone else, I really don’t think it is worth it. No one is worth changing yourself over, or risking your personal well being. You have Twitters attention. You have the world’s attention. All anyone wants is for you to be happy, and most importantly, to stay safe and healthy. Amanda, PLEASE.

So Amanda Bynes, I wish you the best.   The world is watching, and so am I.

A loving and concerned fan,

The Social Butterfly

  1. I loved this! I remember it was the best feeling to watch her on The Amanda Show. She was so relatable! She was like the type of pretty you could just relate too. I am super disappointed. Hopefully she gets a good PR team to help her..
