PR Stories: Miley Cyrus and MaryJane

Ladies and Gentlemen, Hannah Montana is no more. If you didn’t know that by now you must not be into popular culture at all. Since her departure from Disney’s hit show, singer and actress Miley Cyrus has been doing everything she can to dispel her sweet and innocent image. From cutting off her signature long brown locks and dying them platinum blonde a la singer Pink, Miley is edgier than ever.

Indeed the young starlet doesn’t seem to care what anyone thinks about her. While reminiscent of other rebellious pop stars who have cast aside any media woes (see Rhianna and Justin Bieber), I personally find Miley’s antics to be youthfully charming. She reminds me of a girl I would hang out with, that is if I was a rich twenty-something living the Hollywood lifestyle. She gets into trouble, but not too much trouble. She and her fiance have a healthy and young relationship. Though not without it’s problems, she doesn’t feel the need to obnoxiously broadcast her personal life. Indeed, it seems that she is trying her best to live as a normal adolescent would, granted without a college student’s budget. But not everyone is a fan of Cyrus’ new bad girl image.

There’s been a slew of protests from mothers who condemn Cyrus’ questionable behavior. They state that as a “role model” for young girls, it is Miley’s duty to set an example. Though it’s true that some may look up to Miley Cyrus, (why I do not know) it was not the singer’s choice to be placed upon this imaginary pedastal the public has built for her. Lucky for her, as she gets older and Hannah Montana becomes a distant memory, it seems that she is more at liberty to do whatever she pleases.

Miley has had her share of scandals in her day. She was filmed giving a lapdance to an older male friend, and was also caught smoking a curious substance out of a bong. She claimed it was salvia, a hallucinogen that is still legal in the states. While these controversies caused minor bumps in her career and relationship with the public, it also endeared her to some of her fans with whom she had previously lost street cred for the whole “Hannah Montana thing”. In a way her youthful mistakes humanized her and reminded everyone that Miley is still a girl who has a little bit of growing up to do.

More recently, Miley Cyrus was spotted lighting up a cigarillo, which many are assuming was filled with marijuana, openly in the middle of a popular LA club. The photos, released by TMZ, provide concrete evidence that she is indeed a fan of the ganja. Does this look like the makings of a PR disaster for little Miley ? She’s not the first to do so, as superstar Rhianna was spotted doing the exact same thing at the same club last week. And if Miley’s I-could-care-less attitude is evidence of her future behavior, I doubt that this will spell out any kind of doom for her career.

There has been little backlash from the public and many think that the starlet should be allowed to do as she pleases. She also has a very different fan base from her Disney days. Most Miley supporters are now in their teenage years and are more sympathetic to her rebellion. And the mothers who previously decried her behavior have disappeared into the woodwork for now.

I guess this means that Miley can freely continue her playful antics and wild ways.

Here is a video of Miley twerking in a unicorn costume. You know, just for fun.

  1. I actually think that Miley Cyrus is acting her age. This girl has been playful for years whether being Hannah Montana or herself. I just can’t imagine Miley being a good role model while “blazing it up”, especially for her younger fans. Hopefully things look up for little Miley, if she gets her mind right!

  2. Like Caroline said, she is acting her age but you pay a price for being in the limelight. She needs to recognize that she has younger fans. WOW, the lap dance.
