Graphic Design III
LOCATING PLACE: ANIMATED GIF
My first gif was inspired by the flower beds in East Austin. They are all full of bright, vibrant flowers and the natural landscapes juxtaposes the buildings beautifully. I wanted to highlight that in the gif. My second and third gif was inspired by the signage in the neighborhood. They incorporate the same kinds of bright shades that the flower beds and houses do. My third and fourth gifs are vector based and more literal and geometric. The fifth gif is modeled after a google map.
Motion is a hard concept for me to grasp as a designer. I understand and execute static design well. These gifs were hard for me to create because they are so short. I felt like a few seconds wasn’t enough time to flesh out an idea, even if it was in a series of gifs.
LOCATING PLACE: BOOK
Colors make us feel cheerful or sad, excited or calm, unemotional or neutral. Colors connect us through their associative power to nature: the goldenrod yellow of the sun, the blue sky, the Kelly green of grass and trees, and all the variety of colors of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. East Cesar Chavez has a wide array of vibrant colors in every aspect of the neighborhood. From the painted window trim to the fruit drinks at the panderia to the flower beds out front of the new vegan restaurants. The area is bursting with color. I designed a book that captures the essence of those colors. I took a systematic approach to documenting the numbers, statistics, and occurrences of color around the neighborhood in an artistic, infographic style book. I focused on different sections to show the experience of the neighborhood: natural color (flowers, plant life, fruits, food), man-made color (architectural, buildings, the difference between the new buildings with muted colors), and demographics of the neighborhood connected with gentrification.
