A local artist is bringing the wonders of art into a small border town in Texas
Adrian Ordaz is a local artist who is taking on the persona of his fictional character, Violet Warrior from his imaginary world. He takes pride in showing spirit in his creative process in finding inspiration in music, comic books, spirituality, and human interactions are a few things he likes to showcase in his artwork. In his art room, he is surrounded by some of his inspirational musical artists he has drawn like Bebe Rexha, Mac Miller, and Halsey.
Ordaz and some local artists started a small art movement called, Aguila y Serpentine Studios to bring art to their small community. “The movement was created by people who had a passion,” said Ordaz. The movement was moving and shaking things around with promoting events. Networking with people brought a local city man, Joe Cruz who is now the Main Street Director, liked the idea and funded the art center. Cruz donation was a step in the right direction and more local artists are helping each other to continue to showcase the art scene to a small border town. Eagle Pass Art and Culture Center is located downtown in Eagle Pass, Tx. This center is for local artists like Ordaz to have an establishment to express their creativeness, educate, entertain, and promote themselves by using visual arts, literature, performing arts, and humanities.
Ordaz and a group of local artists from the Eagle Pass Main Street program started on a historical mural of Main Street from Van Buren Eagle Pass, Texas. The mural will bring art, color, and history into the downtown area. In the ribbon-cutting ceremony, these artists were recognized but the recognition is not the reason he did it. “It is not so much about being recognized, it’s about doing it. It’s going to get done, if you have a belief, spirit, soul, and drive, then it’s already done, you have to believe it,” said Ordaz. Today, people can stop by and admire what Eagle Pass once looked like.
Bebe Rexha is one of the musical artist Ordaz finds inspiration, it took him 8-10 hours spread out a 4 month period. Considering he is not a full-time studio artist due to his art teaching career. He uses the white charcoal pencil to highlight and the black charcoal pencil to build up the features with darker layers to capture her aesthetic.
In Ordaz’s next project, which is still in the planning stages, a client wanted a drawing of his daughter who has autism, among other conditions. Ordaz shared with her mother that there is an X-Man character named Monet who has autism. “Probably one of the first X-Man with a disability and the first time I was introduced to autism. said Ordaz. The little girl’s mother was inspired by the story and wanted him to draw her daughter like a superhero. The first technique is outlining the little girl’s photo, this will help him capture every detail.
In Ordaz’s current project, he is drawing a self-portrait of his client’s mother and he uses a color print photo as a reference to guide him through the drawing process. His favorite tools to draw are charcoal pencils because it gives him the gritty, nostalgic, and sketchy texture in his artwork but he is not limited to other techniques. All of Ordaz’s art tools are laid out on his desk, as he continues on to finish the self-portrait.
Ordaz is concentrating on finishing minor details of the charcoal portrait. His client asks him to draw a self-portrait of a cherished photo of his mother, Mae. The client wanted to surprise her boyfriend who lost all of his childhood photos from a fire.” This was the only picture that he has of his mom and he cherishes it as the last memory fading away and is afraid of losing it” said Ordaz. The draw will be another duplicate so the image can last forever as this masterpiece captured the beauty of a loved one.
