Kiss Me I’m Irish!

St. Patrick'sSt. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is just around the corner.  Austinites love a good party and St. Paddy’s Day is just another reason to celebrate.  This year, it falls on Sunday of the final weekend of the SXSW music festival.

If you’re looking to join in the festivities and maybe drink some green beer, there are plenty of places around Austin.  Here are some local Irish pubs:

  1. Opal Divines – four locations around Austin and a full-service menu and bar.  Live music during SXSW at some locations.  Downtown – 700 West 6th Street.  Penn Field – 3601 S. Congress Ave.  www.opaldivines.com
  2. Fado’s – there’s usually a huge crowd during St. Patrick’s and a large cover charge but always seems to be jam-packed for a party.  214 W. 4th Street.  www.fadoirishpub.com/austin
  3. B.D. Riley’s – local Irish Pub, in the heart of Austin’s 6th Street Entertainment District.  Full menu and live bands.  204 W. 6th St.  www.bdrileys.com
  4. Dog and Duck Pub – located in the UT area – 406 W. 17th St.  www.dogandduckpub.com

For a more family-friendly event, a traditional Irish festival will be held:  St. Patrick’s Day Festival 2013.   There will be games, face-painting, children’s storybook hour, Gaelic classes, music, dancing, food and fun.  Shoal Creek Event Center, 8611 N. Mopac.  www.stpatricksdayaustin.com

For a truly unique experience away from the city, head out to Sherwood Forest Faire in McDade, Texas (near Bastrop).  Go back in time and enjoy St. Patrick’s Day in true Celtic tradition with live costumed performers and a replica village complete with shopping and dining.  www.sherwoodforestfaire.com

Whatever way you choose to spend the day, have a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

An Irish toast:  May the leprechauns be near you, to spread luck along your way.  And may all the Irish angels, smile upon you St. Patrick’s Day.

Leslie, thanks for this and your other pieces. Great work–and useful advice on making the most of St. Pat’s day. I love the Dog&Duck, though I haven’t been there in awhile. You’ve reminded me that I need to get back.

    Well, guys and gals-

I work as a bartender at Fadó, so come and visit me anytime during the month of March.
Seriously, I will probably just set up a cot in the basement…

No, really- stop on by and have a pint, we have great events all month long and tons of free shows during SXSW.

    Cheers-
    Daniella
