Hi, this is Tim Green, the advisor for the New Literati student publication and the professor of the Magazine Writing class.
New Literati began as an idea from New College students in the early 1990s. Since the first volume in 1993, we have published eight other volumes featuring the work of New College and MLA students. The publication has appeared roughly ever other year, but with new funding in 2011 from MLA grad and New College adjunct professor David Hughart and his wife, Betsy, it has become an annual publication, produced as a project of the Magazine Writing class that is open to both New College and MLA students.
So, this spring, we begin another publication effort. We are looking to revitalize the ezine with lively, fresh commentary via blogs, links, media, and special features. The print version of New Literati will be developed during the Spring 2013 semester and published in the early summer, we hope. The success of the ezine and the print version depends on the imagination and energy of students. This can be a pro forma process or it can become a process of creative discovery, developing self-knowledge, general knowledge, and communication strengths.
I think we should start from scratch, as much as possible. Let’s assume New Literati has not existed before. We can make it anew. We can change its name, if we want. We can change its editorial direction and its mission. Anything is possible. Traditionally, New Literati has been a literary magazine that features poetry, essays, and stories from St. Edward’s University students in the New College and Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) programs. Last year, we expanded the literary focus to include a journalistic (magazine) component–the Profiles featuring New College and MLA students, alumni, and faculty. I’m hoping the scope of what we now call New Literati can expand even further this semester. Not even the sky can contain us.
I’m pleased to announce that the 10th edition of New Literati will have these three students as its editors: Lynna Longaro (New College English major) will serve as editor-in-chief and continue her editing duties from last year’s successful effort; Steven Grant (MLA student) will serve as the feature editor; and Leslie Marlow will serve as assistant editor. They will plan and supervise the publication process for the print version as well as the ezine version of the journal.
