Looking for a weekend getaway? Texas Cabin Village offers 400 acres of exploration, including over 7 ponds, a variety of plant and wildlife and camping grounds that include a fire pit and a oriental T-pee. Texas Cabin Village is located in Paige Texas, and is apart of the Bastrop County area. Its landscape varies across the acres from dry dirt paths to muddy roads and grassy fields to graveled trails and manmade bridges. Due to recent rainfall, several creeks and streams have formed and run under natural bridges created by fallen trees and perfectly placed rocks. “it’s an abode of adventure” Riley Henegar, a freshman at St. Edward’s University explains.

Explore on foot, or ride around on a golf cart and enjoy all the features the ranch has to offer. On my visit, I started the day off at one of the many fishing ponds. The ponds are home to bass, catfish, frogs, water moccasins, and turtles—who are not afraid to come on to land. Across from the campgrounds you will find a herd of cows that roam freely across the ranch, spending their days grazing in green fields. Now that it’s spring time, newly born calfs cling innocently to their mothers; drinking milk from their utters—a beautiful sight to see. Wildlife also includes coyotes, wild hogs, donkeys, a mule and elk. Nonnative species include antelope and oryx, which were brought over from Africa by the owner, Bob Gualy. The diverse wildlife that inhabits the land is quite amazing. Birds like cardinals and Mexican Eagles soar through the sky and then make rest in high oak trees away from predators. Random patches of wildflowers including wild daisy’s, blue bonnets and lilies have been dispersed all over the land by pollination and glaze on top of the fields. Despite daily visitors and campers, the ranch is free of rash and human disturbances; “It really is the place to go when you’re wanting a break from the stress of everyday life” Katherine Gualy, granddaughter of Bob Gualy shares. Another great factor is the absence of pesticides and fertilizers on plant life. The water is clearer and the grass is greener without the input of harsh chemicals, which would cause extreme damage to the ranch’s  plant and aquatic life if used.

The transition from day to night was my favorite part of the visit. As the day grew to an end, the ranch softly became quiet. The sunset was as if someone painted across the sky with warm purples, pinks, and oranges. After the sun set, there was a brief moment of silence, but as soon as darkness fell loud croaks from frogs and echoed hoots from owls spread across the ranch. I ended my day around the campfire with friends, roasting marshmallows and gazing at the stars that spread across the beautiful Texas sky. Texas Cabin Village is a perfect place to go if you’re looking for outdoor adventure, or simply a relaxing weekend getaway. Enjoy all amenities the ranch offers with friends and family, while still being close to home!
