Typography I: Type Specimen Poster

The assignment was to make a type specimen poster as a self-portrait with a font we created. I fulfilled the project requirements by creating a poster displaying my font “Hamulus Nue,” which was a font I created on fontstruct, then went into photoshop to alter. I Created not only the fontstruct version of Hamulus Nue, but also a decorative floral version. The process I followed to create this font used physical craft and technology. I first drew floral illustrations in pen that I then transferred to photoshop and created a pattern of flowers. I then used my illustrated floral pattern as the positive space of my decorative font. I made the decision to use a floral positive space because I wanted to create a large scale font. Hamulus Nue, especially the decorative floral version works best on large scale posters when the detail of the underlying illustrations can be seen. My design embodies the ideas in my concepts because this font functions as a self-portrait. I created a very bold typeface so that it could hold a design in the positive space. My front functions as a self-portrait because it is versatile and decorative, calling attention to its intricacy. My design enhances the content by not allowing the floral pattern in the positive space of the characters to distract from the letters themselves. The font is black and white, but the background color adds to the floral and delicate feel. Also, the type specimen poster uses numbers, lowercase characters and uppercase characters of the non-floral font, showing versatility.
