The assignment was to make a series of marks that relate to a common theme. The marks work together to create a symbol methodology.I fulfilled the project requirements by creating a symbol methodology of symbols that portray the term “naturalistic.” The process I followed combined icons of images and concepts behind images. I used illustrator to create vector images that can grow or shrink without pixelating. I made the decisions to use skulls, crystals, and a bear because they read as natural objects that are not synthetic in any way. A skull is, in my opinion, a very natural symbol, as it is something that people can’t outwardly change no matter the amount of makeup or surgery. Similarly, crystals are nature’s bones. They grow in their own formations when left untouched by humans. Additionally, a bear is wildness and naturalism embodied. I thought it was important to show the living aspect of the natural world, hence the bear. My design embodies the ideas in my concepts by using minimal flourishes. I wanted to show the natural elements of crystals and bones combined to portray their similarity. I also wanted to show the bear as a more organic mark, using curves and more friendly shapes. My design enhances the content by morphing bone and crystal into one mark while comparing those harsh angles and delicate lines to the densely organic nature of the bear.
