For this blog I want to focus my attention to an individual who has inspired us to blog more and has given us ideas on how we as ‘The Food Waste Project’ can make a difference. His name is Jonathan Bloom, he is a journalist, speaker, and consultant, and he dedicates most of his life to combating the problem that is food waste.

For me he first came to interest on Twitter, he has a big presence on there and has over 10,000 followers so every move he makes on Twitter goes out to a big audience. Despite food waste being a topic talked about often, there is surprisingly not so many figures out there online that convey weekly information on food waste. There are organisations we have followed online but in terms of having names of people out there online there is not as many bloggers to follow. Jonathon Bloom is an exception and it seems like his name always keeps coming up when searching for information.

He has a website Wastedfood.com which is very interactive. He has a page on there that is titled ‘Tips’ where people can post comments about their own tips on how to save food. It is just like a long thread of comments from people some experienced at preserving food and some not talking to each other about ways they can all help. I think this is a great idea as it creates a bit of a buzz about the topic. The more people talk about food waste the more people will feel compelled to do something about it.

His style of writing is informal which makes it quite relatable for all ages. It is also not so heavy, a lot of the food waste information online talks about death and hunger which is the consequences we face by wasting food. But Bloom’s online page makes this topic a bit lighter hearted with catchy lines such as “Hope you’re hungry for change.”

One of the things that he does as well is market and promote other organisations to do with food waste. If you scroll down his twitter page there is a series of retweets which can lead onto other twitter pages. We are trying to do the same thing here at ‘The Food Waste Project’ as we understand that all of us have the same mission – to help save food and stop it going to waste. So by promoting other pages in itself will have a positive effect on making people aware. The more people talk about this topic the more people will educate themselves into making themselves equipped with knowledge for them to take action.
