While doing some research on food waste in America and what more there is to do, I came across an article on fortune.com that brought to my attention that there are in fact apps out there that help to solve America’s massive food waste problem.
If you stop and think for a moment, imagine of all the things you are constantly wasting throughout your day…water, gas, money, electricity, and the most wasted of all in America, FOOD. Food waste is something that is continually growing around the globe and with so many negative affects such as world hunger we need to find as many ways possible to slow down and stop food waste. Having discusses organizations, tips, and changes focused on stopping food waste, it would be foolish not discuss technologies effort in solving this food waste problem.
Nowadays almost everyone has a phone, at least in America. And with so many possibilities just at the touch of your finger, who would have thought we would be able to contribute to making global changes on such a little device held in our hand. Mobile apps now make it easy to connect and donate “on the go” and it makes it easy for you, me, farms, groceries, and restaurants to contribute to this necessary change. Think of how many apps you have on your phone and most of them you don’t even use. I’m here to tell you it is time to clean out your apps like you would your closet and get rid of unnecessary apps and make room for these couple of apps I’m about to share with you. The first app is called Waste No Food, which serves as a marketplace with foods that would otherwise be wasted by farms, restaurants, and grocery stores. Through the app the food can be claimed by charities around the area such as homeless shelters and food pantries. The second app is called Food Cowboy. I found this one interesting because they brought to my attention that when food deliveries get rejected they usually find the nearest dumpster and just throw it all away, but through this app, truck drivers can report what they have and take it to the nearest charity, farm, or compost site. And the last app I’m going to share with you is for those who like to eat out, it’s called the TangoTab which offers free deals at restaurants while at the same time donating a meal for every deal someone uses. This app has fed over 830,000 hungry people with the help of those restaurants participating with the app.
Finding out that there are apps that help solve America’s food waste problem is very interesting and I believe these apps can be a huge helping hand for American’s due to us being on our phones so much. Now the next person who complains that you’re always on your phone, you can tell them you’re making global changes and show them these apps to spread the word and make a change.
