Our goal as The Food Waste Project is to help reduce food being wasted across not only this country but around the world. I am sure a lot of us when we hear about food waste tend to feel a little bit guilty as most likely we have all been in a situation where we have thrown out some food which can no longer be eaten and in fact we could have done more to make the food go to good use, whether it for oneself or for others.

Hunger is an issue that is a huge problem in the world today whether we can see it first-hand or whether we hear about it we must acknowledge that this is a situation where everyone can play a part in helping. The number’s do not lie…a staggering 15.8 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life. Given this statistic we all as human beings should have the attitude to actively pursue in trying help solve this problem we face. While we could all do more for others we should also focus on oneself, how can I help not waste to much food? Well look no further, here are a few tips for when you are trying to preserve your food (in specific fruit and vegetables)!

Vegetables

  • Chop dry green onions and store them in an empty plastic water bottle. Put the bottle in the freezer and sprinkle out what you need when you’re cooking.
  • Keeping potatoes away from onions when storing.
  • Store asparagus upright in a glass of water (just like flowers).
  • Store mushrooms in paper bag so it does not contain the moisture and let them spoil.

Fruit

  • Remove any rotten apples from the bunch as it can infect the others.
  • Putting plastic wrap around the crown of a bunch of banana’s to keep them fresh for days longer.
  • Store tomatoes away from sunlight at room temperature.
  • To avoid chopped avocado or guacamole’s turning brown, leave the pit in, spritz it with some lemon juice or olive oil, cover with plastic wrap, and put it in the fridge.
