Identity Series

This final project was so intriguing to me. I have never thought I had the capabilities to make anything of worth in the film world.  I also never thought I would enjoy it. I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome during this project. We were asked to choose one of the adventures our classmates drew out for us in the previous project about the 2 adventures and document ourselves experiencing that feeling. My feeling was joy and I tried to represent it in a light hearted manner. Using a guitar medley instead of a deep orchestral background tune which I saw repeatedly throughout the class.  I took a more open ended adventure that allowed me to have more freedom to decide where to shoot the video. Learning the camera techniques and seeing the power of angle and speed etc. was fascinating. With this being my first time to make a video it was also my first time using Premiere Pro. Initially intimidating I caught on pretty quickly.

Program Booklet

FulbrightPortfolioSections

This program booklet was for the Fulbright Association conference. They needed their information organized and represented throughout a 26 page booklet in a professional and modern manner. This was a challenge for me but in a good way. It was a lot of information and pages that all needed to stay within the same style and not stray too far off the path. I wanted it be youthful and new age but still corporate. I wanted to bring some color into it but not too much, just to highlight the information and not overshadow it, a design that catches your eye but doesn’t demand constant attention. I went with a soft orange with occasional light brown accenting. This book was a great way to show us how time management is vital and repetition and critiquing yourself over and over is the best thing you can do for yourself and your work.

Instructional Design

Packaging

During this project we were asked to think of two adventures one that we have previously gone on and one that was new to us that would bring on the feelings of either wonder, delight, joy, or solitude.  I chose to represent a bike riding trip to walnut creek Metropolitan Park which is one that I’ve been on before as well as the Radha Mahav Dham Peacock sanctuary in south Austin which I had not been to. The first being an adventure of solitude and the second being an adventure of wonder. I loved the way we did this project because it allowed us to go out doors and see parts of Austin we loved seeing previously or wanted to see. Beyond the locations themselves we were asked to create a sort of souvenir for the other kids in the class that shows our adventure to go on. We were asked to choose between stickers pins and badges. I chose pins because I’ve always thought they were super cute and it would’ve been a good way to represent the adventures I wanted the class to go on. I wanted to make the design of the pens something abstractly representative of the adventure they were going on because I wanted it to be a pin that they would want to use and not just have an obvious object regarding the adventure on it. I love the way that these turned out because their pins that I would personally put on my backpack and love to have. This part of the project was mainly the packaging and souvenirs themselves that you created. I wanted to keep it light and I represented that in the way I designed my work. For the Rhada Mahav Dham Peacock Adventure I used a lot of color. While the Metropolitan Bike Trail I used more earthy colors because that adventure was more to become connected with yourself and nature.

Weather Report

This project was the next step of our previous L.A.T.C.H. project. Instead of 5 different motion graphics we were asked to choose 3 of the structures to use and create a transition between them to accomplish designing a weather report comparing the highs, lows, and climate conditions of four cities over a three day weekend. We were able to choose any locations around the world. I chose to use location, alphabetical and category. I am happy the way this turned out. I believe I came a long way from the original L.A.T.C.H. videos. I was able to make it more graphically appealing and work in some visual alterations. This was a very challenging project but I came out understanding After Effects in a whole new light. I wouldn’t say its one of my most favored Adobe Programs but i have to admit the project outputs are pretty cool to see.

Metaphorical Packing Trip

Backpack Packing

During this project we were asked to pick out and pack a bag for a series of walking adventure throughout Austin. It was mainly to show what our bag and its contents indicates about ourselves as an explorer. We chose a bag and packed it and then put it on display for the class to see. This showed myself that I’m a crazy over thinker and packer. That I have colorful belongings and that I tend to go the sporty route. I had to pari down about half the stuff I originally packed because it wouldn’t all fit and I had to be practical. The last step was to document the bag and contents on a 17×22 poster. This project also helped us learn the technicalities behind photographing objects for display. Editing photos in photoshop as well.

This project introduced us to the art of motion design. This involved choreographing elements within a video to represent a certain outcome. In this case, we made 5 different storyboards for 5 motion pieces. Each one expressing the principles of: location, alphabet, category, and hierarchy. We were given the information to represent through our motion videos. We were asked to see the different ways in which you could represent the information with the changing spaces, lines, shapes etc. This was further practice in creating storyboards in Illustrator (using layers) and importing into After Effects to create motion from stills. A skill we were introduced to in Image Methodology. I had some trouble with this exercise seeing as After Effects hadn’t clicked with me yet. (I get the hang of it as you can see in the next project we did). But this allowed me to play around and really test the waters. Therefore I do feel like these exercises are very basic but were a great stepping stone to the next project. Which I know was the intention.

Critical Mass

This was the most challenging project during Image Methodology. But also the most rewarding. Although it doesn’t look like a lot of video it was a very long process. After Effects is difficult to grasp and there are so many techinicalities behind it. I started with building all the cartoons in illustrator and importing them into After Effects. From there I focused on the motion of the grinch. We had done a previous project practicing the movements of the layered body parts. A very difficult motion to get down. But I did my best and am happy with the results. I wanted to create a humorous video of a dream I once had and I loved being able to show that visually through this motion video.

Personal Geography: Cognitive Map

Cognitive Map

This map was supposed to personify the thought process we go through while attempting to make a decision. Any kind of decision, whether it be big or small. From deciding which outfit to wear for the day to Each level of thought that was necessary in getting to the final decision was supposed to be shown on the map. I found this project to be really simple considering I had just made such a decision myself regarding traveling abroad. In the end, upon discussing it with Tuan we decided that probably wasn’t the smartest choice seeing as I already knew all the little decisions and overlooked them, therefore my map (in comparison to others) was pretty bland and the questions were too broad. Of all the maps this one is my least favorite.

Personal Geography: Perceptual Map

Perceptual Map

This map was supposed to represent a map regarding our senses. As many senses as you could apply into your map: Taste, touch, smell, see, hear. A map that shows how all the senses are used together for a perfect outcome. In this sense, regarding food. I chose to rate all the different burgers with different meats, cheeses and sauces at Hopdoddy and rank their ingredients regarding flavor and spiciness. I had fun with this map. Mainly because I got to eat the remaining burgers on my Hopdoddy to do list, but also because I got to see how each burger appeals to different people. I spoke to some people that were there and asked them why they decided on their particular burger. No surprise a majority were for the taste or health level. But it was interesting to see none the less. Regarding the design I chose I wanted it to be a more natural and fun representation. Most of the type is hand done in Illustrator to create that organic appeal. Which I thought was representative of Hopdoddy. Especially in creating the little animal characters showing what meats were the ones being graphed out.
