5 Tips for Thrifting Clothing Online During 2020
- Learning Your Measurements
The most simple and important factors in finding the right fit of clothing is knowing your measurements. Understanding your Pit to Pit measurement and shirt length will save you tons of time and money when trying to find the perfect T-Shirt online. It’s easy to tell IRL when you’re thrifting, it’s got to the point where I can pick up a shirt and see how it will fit on my body. Trying to find bottoms can be a challenge online, even with measurements, jeans and pants will always fit a different way. Leaning your waist, inseam, and pant cuff are the most important measurements in finding a good pair of bottoms.
- Best Thrifting Apps for Clothing
Normally, I only use apps like eBay and Depop to find rare clothing items, but from another blog post I found on hercampus.com, they suggested apps like Poshmark and ThreadUp for finding thrifted items (4 Online Thrifting Apps All Thrifting Pros Should Have On Their Phone, 2020). I’ve never tried Poshmark or ThreadUp, but I will certainly check them out. I’d also add Grailed to that list for people that like luxury thrifted clothing.
- Instagram Explore Page Thrifting
Recently, I’ve found that Instagram is a great place to find unique thrifted items. Many people advertise their own websites or clothes on Instagram pages. The reason that IG is a great place to find thrifted items is because the IG algorithm is one of the best ways to find items that you like. I’d suggest creating a new account specifically for finding clothing and let the IG Explore page do the work. Creating a new account will clear the clutter away from your regular content and curate a page just for shopping.
- Searching Different Sites Before Purchasing
I received this tip from my sister, who is either the luckiest person I know or the most talent thrifter I know. Some of my favorite and unique items of clothing were found by my sister. When I asked her how she always finds unique items, she said that the most important thing is to check every app before making a purchase. The apps she mentioned are Mercari, Poshmark, Depop, and the most important: eBay. Searching all of these apps helps to find the best price and sometimes you will find a treasure trove of clothing that you were searching for.
- Bundles and Discounts
One tactic I’ve always used on Depop is to ask for $5-10 dollars off of an item. Most of the time, sellers will give you a discount just for asking if an item has been listed for a while. It’s almost guaranteed that a seller will give you a discount if you purchase more than one item. Some people will try to use these tactics in a sleazy way like asking for 50% off of an item, or demanding bundles and not purchasing them. If you are one of these people, please fix your ways. Just remember to always be nice and understanding if a seller doesn’t want to give you a discount.
