Kristine O’Connell George is one of the principle voices in contemporary children’s poetry. Her beautifully written poetry effortlessly communicates her love of nature and the outdoors. Throughout her twelve published works, George spans themes such as relationships, like those with our parents or siblings, nature, animals, special moments within our lives, and the natural beauty of the outside world. Her use of imagery, point of view, and imaginative voice throughout all of her works allows her to weave magical tales in just a few short lines. Her poems would pair best with the Science TEKS in grades 1st-3rd relating to the study of frogs, life cycles, trees, and plants.
I love your teaching suggestions. I would want to try them all. It would be a great thinking experience to play with point of view. Seeing the world from another perspective can be eye opening
I thought the presentation was really excellent! You were able to connect with the author through her poetry and it is obvious that you truly enjoy and respect her work. That will be evident to your students if you were to do the specific poem activity in the future. I think the younger students, pre-k and kindergarten, may benefit from hearing the poetry by George. I just wonder how you would be able to incorporate the higher language and activity you chose. Maybe the students could draw a picture and write a few words that describe that image? I really enjoyed your teaching ideas and hope to use the Tree Poems in the future!
