Visual Identity: Mark

This assignment was to make a mark for a chose public space in Austin. My chosen spot was the Greenbelt. Before we began the making of this mark we had done a lot of research on the area to aid us and inspire us to make a concept. My concept was to separate busy daily life and focus on the natural undisturbed aspects that the Greenbelt provides. When we had our first critique we needed to sketch or create different marks under certain concepts. My initial 3 concepts were preserve, protect and enjoy. For Preserve, I used a literal sense such as the mason jar with leaves inside or the circle with leaves representing leaves pressed into glass for things like a coaster. For Enjoy, I used smooth lines to gives an impression of calmness with symbols such as a heart shape. For the mid-point critique, my most promising idea was preserve. Therefore, I chose to further evolve the idea of pressed plants to make a system of marks. My final product was three different pressed plants for each of the 4 seasons. The marks also hold an educational value as these plants can be found within the Greenbelt and include their names on the various marks.

Process Work/ Research Pictures

This was an assignment with the purpose of preparation for working on a big project that revolved around a chosen public space. The public space I selected for the assignment was the Greenbelt. The process work was a form of a precursor for the project as we had to conduct research to inspire us and inform us of our locations. During the research, I was assigned to take photos of the Greenbelt. When I went to my site I tried to look for any interesting patterns or textures that inspired me. As I did this, I started to notice small plants and flora. These small bits of nature inspired me to start noticing and photographing unique fauna and flora in the Greenbelt.

Mapping Project: Cognitive Map

This assignment was to visually map a decision. I chose to focus my assignment about how to pick out an appropriate perfume, with regards to preference, season and outfit color. The first draft of this map was to make a wireframe of this map. This helped to conceptually lay out the ideas we had with the map and how to strategically lay out my idea. The design for this map was inspired by my appreciation of perfume bottles. Therefore, I made small icons for each of the bottles to include in my map, so they may also be identified by others. The background was inspired by the spray of an atomizer and I represented this by the positioning of the circles to give it the spray effect. I used the corresponding outfit color by framing each bottle with the coordinating colors in an abstract shape.

Mapping Project: Information Map

In this assignment, I was given two data sets on Excel of a person’s expenses over a year. The purpose of this assignment was to make raw data into infographics. I chose to do this by using pie charts and bar graphs. My project was based on the investigation of whether this person lived with another person or by himself. I did this by comparing this subject to my own statistics, as I lived with another person. To investigate this question, I compared bills such as general utility as well as gas bills. To represent general utility bills, I used a bathtub and water to symbolize the water component of the bill. I also included a legend for the general utility bill as it was necessary for properly understanding the information. The gas bill was represented with a pie chart made to look like the knobs on a stove top.

Mapping Project: Artifact Map

This map was meant to be a personal geography map representing a route or area you frequently visit or go to. In the beginning of this project, we each had to pitch 3 ideas and the class voted on the ideas which we thought would be most promising. The class ended up favoring my idea of mapping dog walking paths around my neighborhood. In my map, I decided to include the temperature, dependent on the shade in the area as well as, various disruptions found in the neighborhood. The way I visualized temperature was by using paw prints on the streets with color ranging from blue to red to symbolize cold to hot. To depict the disruptions in the neighborhood I created icons of traffic cones to show road work being done around the area, as well as, dogs barking, people yelling, garage workshops, high traffic areas and loud music. I also included an illustration of my dog to highlight the title and purpose of the piece.

Symbol Methodology

For this symbol assignment we designed three contextual symbols that were to be printed in vinyl sticker form. In the beginning of the assignment we were given a sheet on which we made 3 images for traced photos, stylized images and a non-objective representation of certain words under one context, in total we had 9 drawings. The context I chose was photo manipulation, as I wanted to make a symbol that could be used to represent manipulated photos in Media. I went through a series of iterations for the symbols, creating new and more perfected versions of the three symbols. In the end I chose to make a series of different eyes that were representative of photo manipulation. The symbol that I felt was most relevant to this was the eye with the bar code inside it as it was a representation of Media trying to sell you products through the use of photo manipulation and self-esteem in the eye of the viewer. The others were a closed eye to represent blindness to the true original image and a half-closed eye, to represent the partial view of the truth.

Wikipedia Reader

In this Typography assignment I chose an entry from Wikipedia that interested me and met certain length requirements. My Wikipedia reader was about Aurora Borealis. I then had to decide on the typeface I wanted to use in the reader, it was important that the typeface was appropriate for my topic. After this, I used InDesign to created sample layouts of the spreads of our using a provided grid and various elements that needed to be included such as page numbers, headers etc. When I had created my final product, my reader and those of the other students in the class were printed out 13 times and folded to create 13 physical book. To make the physical book I had to trim the pages accordingly and staple the spine of the book to keep it together.

Plotter Lesson

The Plotter assignment was to make 12 illustrations made by the pen plotter grouped under the same theme. I chose my theme to be zodiac as there are 12 different zodiacs. While it was my initial plan to make 12 different illustrations, due to the time constraint and complexity of my pieces I made 4 zodiacs; Leo, Pieces, Aries and Aquarius. These illustrations started out on illustrator as line drawings that would properly register onto the plotter. However, the complexity of the plotter drawings was not possible for the plotter as it was very fine detail that would take too long to be printed onto the plotter. Therefore, the small details on the plotter pieces were hand drawn, whereas the larger lines were made by the plotter.
