Bear with me bc my interviewees weren’t available due to traveling for the holidays. Here is a rough outline:
Introduce David Sollee
Where he is now in life
- plays 4-5 shows a week
- Makes a living as a musician
- The Soulies
- Opinion from “Poopie” about Dave
- Opinion from his girlfriend
Go back to where he started
- Went to UT for music
- Got married and became involved in the Church
- Decided he didn’t want to do that anymore
- Hiked the Appalachian trail
- Rekindled his connections in Austin
Success as a musician is __
Looking forward, what’s next?
Will be a buzzfeed-style video, with pictures/videos with text overlaying it to tell the story

Bear with me bc my interviewees weren’t available due to traveling for the holidays. Here is a rough outline:
Introduce David Sollee (IS HE THE MUSICIAN? WHAT INSTRUMENT?)
Where he is now in life
plays 4-5 shows a week (WHERE?)
Makes a living as a musician (THAT’S IMPRESSIVE? IS THAT COMMON? HOW LONG HAS HE BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT?)
The Soulies (IS THIS HIS BAND?)
Opinion from “Poopie” about Dave (HOW IS POOPIE RELATED TO DAVE? ARE THEY IN THE BAND TOGETHER? HOW DID THEY MEET?)
Opinion from his girlfriend (WHOSE GIRLFRIEND?)
Go back to where he started (TO WHERE DAVID STARTED? OR THE SOULIES?)
Went to UT for music (IS HE ORIGINALY FROM TEXAS?)
Got married and became involved in the Church (HOW’D THAT GO?)
Decided he didn’t want to do that anymore (WHY?)
Hiked the Appalachian trail (WHAT INSPIRED THAT DECISION? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? WAS HE ALONE? HAS HE READ WILD? -JK BUT THAT’S INTERESTING!)
Rekindled his connections in Austin (HOW? WAS THAT INTENTIONAL? HAPPENSTANCE?)
Success as a musician is __
Looking forward, what’s next? (IS HE STILL MARRIED? WHAT DOES HIS WIFE THINK ABOUT HIS LIFESTYLE? IS IT SUSTAINABLE? DO THEY HAVE CHILDREN? DOES IT MATTER? CAN THEY AFFORD TO REMAIN IN AUSTIN? IS IT A CONCERN? DOES HE HAVE TO TOUR OUTSIDE OF THE CITY? OUTSIDE OF THE STATE? WOULD HE WANT TO? WHATS THE COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF THIS LIFE? DOES IT MATTER? JUST TRYING TO GIVE YOU SOME QUESTIONS! I’D BE INTERESTED TO HEAR THE OPINION OF AN ARTIST WHO HAS SPENT THE BULK OF HIS CAREER AND MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT IN AUSTIN DISCUSS HOW THE CITY HAS CHANGED OR HASN’T CHANGED. I KNOW THE ISSUE OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR TEACHERS AND ARTISTS IS AN ISSUE THE CITY HAS BEEN TRYING TO ADDRESS RECENTLY. DOES THIS EFFECT THIS ARTIST? DOES HE HAVE AN OPINION?)
Will be a buzzfeed-style video, with pictures/videos with text overlaying it to tell the story (SOUNDS LIKE A COOL WAY TO TELL THIS STORY! CANT WAIT TO SEE IT!)
SIDEBAR: I READ YOUR PITCH AND JENA’S COMMENT SO I DECIDED TO GO BACK AND READ BOTH OF YOUR OTHER STORIES. YOU CLEARLY ENJOY YOUR BEAT AND WHO/WHAT YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT. I THINK YOUR FIRST STORY HAD A TON OF INTERESTING POINTS ABOUT A VERY HAZY/EVOLVING ASPECT OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. BUT YOUR SECOND STORY HAD MORE FOCUS AND WHEN I FINISHED READING IT I FELT LIKE I HAD A COHESIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPANY AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE AUSTIN MUSIC SCENE. YOU ALSO SEEMED TO CARE ABOUT THE PROJECT AND THE PEOPLE IN IT WHICH IS ALWAYS FUN TO READ. I GET THE IDEA THAT THIS WILL BE A REALLY COOL FEATURE BUT SINCE JENA SAID YOU’VE ALREADY WRITTEN THIS STORY(WAS IT FOR ANOTHER CLASS? OR DOES SHE JUST MEAN YOU ALREADY USED THE SUBJECT AS A SOURCE?) I THINK THE AFFORDABILITY OF HOUSING FOR ARTISTS IS A REALLY INTERESTING TOPIC THAT YOU COULD GET THEM TO TALK ABOUT. WHAT ABOUT ALL THE MUSIC FESTIVALS AROUND HERE!?! I MEAN THERE IS ONE EVERY WEEKEND! IS THAT GOOD FOR A LOCAL ARTIST? BAD? IS IT LUCRATIVE? THERE JUST SEEMS TO BE SO MUCH COMPETITION AND SO MUCH MUSICAL CONTENT (I GOT THAT FROM YOUR FIRST STORY!) HOW DO THEY NOT GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE? WHAT IS THE MEASURE OF SUCCES FOR AN ARTIST? IS IT FAME OR JUST WORK?? LMK IF YOU WANT ME TO READ ANOTHER VERSION AT ANYTIME. I HOPE SOMETHING IN HERE WAS HELPFUL.

Excellent critique, Hailey. Yes, that’s what I was getting at with my earlier comment. I would like you to push yourself to write something that isn’t, essentially, a profile of a musician or band. The housing idea is a great one. So is medical insurance for musicians. That has been a big issue in Austin for the past few years and there has been a huge push and, if I’m remembering this correctly, a non-profit formed to help musicians afford help insurance. There are any number of ways to write about the music community. I’d like to see this story branch out and away from a profile.JH
