WeMadeIt–Profile on David Sollee, the singer and ukulelist who plays in a band called the Soulies. They play about four shows a week. Although they have their own music, they mainly perform covers. What are his struggles? What lead him to this point? How does he define success? Where will he be in five years?
Interviews:
David Sollee
Reeve Cooper (his girlfriend)
Poopie (I still don’t know his full name, but I’ll find out)
and one more… maybe I’ll ask Dave who I should talk to? I’m not really sure who the fourth source would be for this. Maybe a spectator at a show?
Multimedia aspect still up in the air–I honestly have no idea what would be best. Maybe a photo slideshow?
Also, I’ve done a profile already. Is it okay to do another, or should I broaden a bit? Ideas? I know someone who goes to SEU who has like 200,000 youtube followers and is a musician of his own right but studies finance. He might be a good alternative because it allows a story to be told about the internet’s role in a musician’s success. The only issue is that I would have no idea who to interview besides the artist.

You’ve done this story. You need to find something else, something outside this particular group of musicians and that is not a profile of a musician. What about a look at some corner of what it’s like to try to make it – just live, financially in Austin as a full-time musician? Something that allows you to do some hard reporting? The cost of living is skyrocketing here. There is less and less affordable housing. The city is making efforts to address these issues in order to keep Austin, “the live music capital of the world.” Why not do some research and write about those efforts?
