The city of Austin is filled with many beautiful trees some of them even being considered famous! In this blog post, we will be looking at a few of the most well-known trees in Austin. So, get your walking shoes ready because after reading this you will want to get out and see some of these beautiful trees for yourself!
Treaty Oak
This first tree is located on the east side of Baylor Ave. between Fifth and Sixth street and is named Treaty Oak. As you might be able to tell from the name, this is a Texas Live Oak which has been known to live for several centuries. In fact, the famous Treaty Oak is believed to have been around for over 500 years now! Because of this, the tree won an award in 1927 from the American Forests’ Hall of Fame for Trees for being the most perfect specimen of a North American tree.
If you ever get the chance, this is a must-visit. You will be able to learn more about the history of the tree, and get to see a 500-year-old tree!
Sorin Oak
The next tree is the Sorin Oak which is located on the campus of Saint Edwards University. Similar to the Treaty Oak, this tree is a Texas Live Oak and has been around for 250 years! The Sorin Oak is also an award winner for the Austin Tree of the Year Award just a year ago today. A fun fact about the tree is that it is named after the founder of Saint Edwards University, Edward Sorin.
If you are ever by the university, I highly recommend checking this spot out, not only is there a beautiful tree to admire, but there is also a great seating area that looks over the skyline of Austin.
Old Baldy
This tree is located in the McKinney Falls State Park along the Rockshelter Interpretive Trail and is named Old Baldy. This is a Bald-cypress tree and it has been here for over 500 years! These trees can grow up to about 120 feet tall and the last time Old Baldy was measured it was 103 feet tall!
If you are looking to make a trip to see this tree keep in mind you will want to bring some water and walking boots, the view will be 100% worth it when you get there!
Mother Pecan
This massive tree is located in Zilker Park and is a pecan tree that is 75 feet tall and is over 500 years old! Like the other trees in this blog, Mother Pecan won the 2011 Large Tree of the Year award.
Mother Pecan is also a very popular spot for yoga, so if you are looking for a fun spot this should be on the top of your list! This is also a great area to just relax and enjoy the outdoors if yoga isn’t for you.
