Trees play a crucial role in the environment all across the world. They are one of the most important resources we have to combat climate change and its effects. From shade to carbon sequestration to habitat, trees provide so much for all of us, but the resources are not distributed evenly.

Austin is no exception. Many of the lower income areas in town have disproportionately lower levels of trees which can bring on a whole new set of issues. High costs to cool homes, stormwater runoff into floods, and polluted air are all major issues that come from a lack of trees.

Guided by the United Nations Sustainability Goals, we are exploring ways to combat climate change and its egregious effects through tree planting, maintenance, and education. As students at St. Edward’s University working on this project initiative, we are aiming to get more awareness about this problem and solution. We hope to share information about what local communities can do and how we can all work together to limit the effects of climate change.
