Living sustainably on a budget

In our last blog post, we talked about some easy things you can do when you’re trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle. But if you’re a college student or recent grad who is looking for a few more things you can do while you’re living on a limited income, here’s a list to get you started.

All of these may seem like really simple things that you’ve already considered, but incorporating all of them into your daily routine could save you both energy and money.

Be mindful when turning up the heat

In the winter months, it can be very tempting to turn up the heat in your living space because it makes it 100 times cozier. However, it can be easy to get carried away and not think about the energy use and money this costs.
The Department of Energy recommends that you turn down the temperature in your house to 68 degrees when you’re at home and awake, and 55 degrees when you leave.

Use energy efficient light bulbs

We use lighting around our homes every day and this can take up quite a bit of energy. Investing in some energy efficient light bulbs can save you up to $45 a year in utility costs and is a great way to relieve some of the stress on the environment.
Some energy companies offer discounts on your utilities bill or will give you free energy efficient light bulbs, so check with them before purchasing your own.

Start composting!

Composting is an extremely environmentally friendly way to reuse waste. Instead of throwing away food scraps, add them to a container full of grass, leaves, coffee grounds, shredded paper, and other compostable items.
If you keep the compost damp and make sure to turn it over around once a day, you’ll be able to use it as a natural fertilizer for your plants at home. It will improve the soil health, and eliminate some pollutants.
