The Real Effects of Vacation Travel
Let’s say this summer an individual wants a California get away from Austin, Texas. From that trip alone on an airplane, there will be .36 Metric tons of CO2 released into the atmosphere. A reminder that the flight is only about 2 and a half hours, which is remotely short but surprising because of the number of pollutants released. The aviation department alone accounts for almost 9% of all air pollutants on earth, that itself is definitely taking a toll on the planet’s global warming. So, what about a recommendation? Find a flight that is one-way so it will reduce the time taken on one plane because off the absence of a possible layover. Also, choose to fly economy! Economy seats may be cheaper and also increase the number of passengers on a flight to ensure full planes take off instead of some at a lower capacity.
Consider a vacation focused around walking or biking
City vacations can sometimes rely heavily on motor transportation. Finding a vacation that limits this type of use can help someone reduce their carbon footprint on the earth. Maybe try to visit a national park or go hiking! America is full of beautiful parks that offer unbelievable scenery and native animals. Another option would be a coastal vacation centered around beaches or coastal regions. Try biking along a scenic coastline or walking down the pier! These both offer little transportation and even promotes a little bit of exercise.
Eco-Friendly Lodging
There are many hotels, resorts, and inns that offer green stays for anyone interested. These places are often accompanied by a stamp of approval by the LEED certification. As stated on the LEED website they say, “LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building, community, and home project types, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.” Take a look at their website and find your next green vacation to stay your next vacation!
What about once you found your perfect stay?
Hang up towels! Even at hotels that aren’t considered “eco-friendly”, they offer little reminders to hang up your towels for reuse. These reminders should be important among guest when they stay because if everyone does it then it will pay a big part in water conservation. Try to use less plastic cups and bottles on your stay. Many hotels offer compostable cups for coffee or water. Look out for these cups so you can feel good about enjoying your beverage that will actually help the planet and not hurt it. One last tip is simple but very important! Make sure to turn off all lights when you leave your room. Lights can be on for a very long time and if kept on will increase the energy needed by the hotel and ultimately lead to more pollution. Hopefully, these tips help you with your next vacation! Always look for ways to help the planet and be more sustainable this summer vacation.
