Are you running out of space in your closet? Have you noticed that you don’t wear a large amount of the clothes in your closet? Does your closet feel unorganized and messy? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, it’s probably time to go about organizing your closet. Organizing your closet may seem like an overwhelming task, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. Here are some steps to follow to help you efficiently organize your closet.

time

Find the Time

First and foremost, you have got to make sure you have enough time set aside to complete the task at hand. It is important that you aren’t rushing to finish due to other obligations, so it would be smart to do this on a day where you are completely free. Find a day where you have lots of time to focus and get critical about what you are going to keep and what you are going to donate. Click here for some tips on how to improve your time management.

categories

Categorize

Begin by taking every item of clothing out of your closet and categorizing them. Tops go in one pile, bottoms in another, and so on. If you want to be even more specific, organize the clothing by season. Tank tops in one pile, long sleeves in another, and so on. Making different piles will help you pace yourself and make the task feel less overwhelming.

Create “Keep” and “Give Away” Piles

Now that you have categorized all the items in your closet, it’s time to create a “Keep” and “Give Away” pile. It can be very difficult to decide whether or not you want to keep an article of clothing, so here are some important questions to ask yourself when you are faced with the decision of “keep or give away?”.

  • Would I buy this today?
  • Does this currently fit me?
  • Would I wear this multiple times?

If you answered no to any or all of these questions, it’s time to say goodbye to that piece of clothing. There’s no point in keeping something that is just going to take up space in your closet, when someone else could be actively utilizing it. Click here to explore other important questions you should ask when deciding whether or not to keep an article of clothing.

recycle

Recycle Your Clothes

It’s time to part ways with clothes you no longer need. Instead of throwing your clothes in the dumpster, put them into a bag and head to your nearest secondhand store. Most secondhand stores take donations, and will resell your used clothes to someone who needs them. Recycling your clothes is environmentally friendly, and helps someone who is in need.
