Food wastage is a global problem that we need to address – Fit Planet

Food Waste Feeds Climate Change

When food gets thrown out, not only does edible food go to waste but so do all the resources that were used to produce it. According to a report made by Love Food Hate Waste, wasted food accounts for more global greenhouse gas emissions than all the commercial flying that takes place in a year. Interestingly, research also shows that, if food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, right behind China and the United States. Can you believe that? Well, it’s true. From the uneaten leftovers you threw out, to the fruits and vegetables that were sent to landfills because they weren’t “pretty enough” to be put on the shelf, food waste is hurting the planet. It seems pretty unfair doesn’t it? So much water, energy, and other resources are used to produce our food, and when 1/3 of all food produced is lost or wasted, our planet suffers the consequences. It’s evident that there’s an issue and that that rather than focusing on producing more food, the challenge should be to feed more people while wasting less of what is already being produced.

How to Help

There are various ways that you can start reducing your “foodprint”, and Food For Second Thought wants to be part of that journey. By raising awareness and increasing consciousness, people can begin to make decisions that put their best interest first as well as our planet’s. Starting now, you can start making small differences slowly reduce food waste such as not overstocking, buying that lightly bruised fruit that will most likely be thrown out, eating your leftovers, and various forms of reducing food waste (for more suggestions click here). While food waste is a large issue, there are still various ways we can make an impact. So, what do you say? Join us and start making a difference for you and the planet. It all starts now.
