3 Movies With Inspirational Women Entrepreneurs
By Hayden
Movies are a great source for inspiration, with viewers more open to the media than ever before. This has since given rise to studies on how films have shaped our beliefs, opinions, stereotypes and attitudes. Through watching new stories and experiences, our knowledge is expanded and we begin to envision possibilities never considered before.
Today, we’re fortunate enough to have many new stories to be able to watch and produce. However, a 2018 report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film reveals women account for 36% of major characters in top-grossing films. That gives you a little higher than a one-in-three chance of watching a movie with a female lead. This blog highlights three boss, leading female characters portrayed in movies, detailing how they’ve broken gender barriers in the workplace and empowered the next generation.
Devil Wears Prada
Miranda Priestly
Miranda Priestly, portrayed by Meryl Streep, is the editor-in-chief of the fictional fashion magazine, Runway. While being a strict boss who strikes fear into her employees, she has earned her title in her field. The film also insinuates that other people as important as she is, are men. She understands that success in the fashion industry relies heavily on her shoulders and she takes that responsibility seriously. As many powerful women are, Miranda is viewed as unpleasant and bossy. However, the film takes into account that she is very complex, has a lot to juggle and is overall a very good leader. If you need to take inspiration from a woman with extreme drive, intelligence and power, look no further than the Devil Wears Prada for Ms. Priestly!
Bridesmaids
Annie Walker
In stark contrast to Miranda Priestly, Annie Walker hit new lows in her life. Played by Kristen Wiig, she’s lost her new beloved bakery business, with her story reflecting those of many entrepreneurs in the economic recession. Annie is a character that a lot of women, especially women in business can find themselves relating to. She longs to be a different, more successful woman than the one she is. In the end, though, despite constant turmoil being thrown at her, she found a way to continue her passion for baking and what’s best for herself and her friends. Annie is a great example of turning your pain into strength, and sticking by those close to you through it all.
Steel Magnolias
Truvy Jones
Set in a small Louisiana suburb, Truvy Jones, played by Dolly Parton, runs a popular hair and beauty salon. In the group of women, Truvy is often the mediator and problem solver, while being the boss lady in charge of it all. As the glue of her friend group, Truvy is also a master at her craft and social butterfly of the town, lending a helping hand while expressing her own creative ideas and solutions. Truvy’s boss character marks a positive portrayal of women in business, and her leadership and responsibility in the group reminds us that, sometimes, we all need someone to lean on.
Let’s Hear It For The Girl!
All of the movies listed above heavily feature female characters, leads and stories linked through their portrayal of women in business. Although each have different statuses and situations, all are fearless stars that have dominated the on-screen business world. These powerful and unique voices prove that women deserve to have their stories told as well as lead their own movies. Hollywood has constantly put women on the back burner, relegating them to love interest roles in stories centered on men. However, the time is now for them to stand up and take center stage.
