We as a society have come a long way in terms of diversity and inclusion. Women’s voices are being increasingly heard in the workplace as time goes on, and this progress cannot be ignored. However, it is important to acknowledge when there is a setback regarding these issues, especially with large and national corporations.
The NFL has recently been called out for their treatment of women in their workplace, and the attorney generals in six states have warned the NFL to rectify this behavior.
The allegations are definitely unsettling, with over 30 former NFL employees alleging mistreatment. Allegations include being denied promotions because of gender and experiencing inappropriate touching from male superiors. With this high number of allegations, it’s very important to recognize them and investigate the workplace environment the NFL has.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy made a statement via email discussing the NFL’s alleged dedication to inclusion and diversity, saying that they have made “great strides over the years in support of that commitment.” McCarthy also stated that the NFL has partnered with organizations that promote inclusion as their mission such as RISE, GLAAD, The Winter’s Group, and Paradigm. They also implemented the “Rooney Rule” this year, which requires all NFL clubs (32) to appoint a woman or someone of a racial minority background as an assistant coach.
This is the perfect example of how surface-level support doesn’t cut it when it comes to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Highlighting the progress made is obviously important, but that doesn’t take away from present allegations. Of course, the rules and practices in place are a step in the right direction for the NFL, but it doesn’t show a deeper dedication to inclusion within their community. This statement appears to be a form of deflection rather than accountability. We need to keep highlighting inappropriate behavior that women experience.
