On April 18th 2023, a cohort of environmental science students met in the St. Andre Multi purpose room, and got the opportunity to share their research to other students, professors and professionals within the field. There was pizza and drinks available and the turn out was good. The evening started with Dr. Concilio making remarks about the opportunities granted to those who are TXSER members. Then Dr. Proppe talked about Wild Basin and the purpose of the event. The first speaker was Dr. Vern Peters who explained his research of Clarkâs Nutcracker and the dispersal rates of Whitebark and Limber pine. The next presenters were two UT students, Annaclair Kepple and Quiynhmai Tran, who discussed the process of building and testing an atmospheric data collector. Then, Dawn Houston explained her research on the importance of riparian ecosystems as stopover locations for migrating birds. The next presenter was Hayden Deppe who mapped out the sounds in Wild basin using recording samples throughout the year. Next, Maya Soojhai talked about her internship opportunity at Wild Basin. Finally, the last speaker was Eve Dean who talked about her internship at Wild Basin, her research at Wild Basin and her research with i4. After all of the presentations were done, many people stayed behind to ask questions and mingle among the presenters. The symposium was an incredible success and there was lots of interesting research shared by bright young minds. I recommend this event to anyone who is interested in the fascinating research being done around Austin.
